  • Farmville's choice: In this lesson, students will learn about rural life in North Carolina at the turn of the century. Home demonstration and 4H clubs implemented many programs to help people learn better farming techniques, ways of preserving food, and taking care of the home. Several North Carolina leaders went to great lengths to ensure the success of these programs. In part of this activity, students help the town of Farmville dedicate a monument to one of those people. Yes - We want more club work

A black and white poster of a four leaf clover with the words “Yes - we want more club work” underneath. Inside the four leaf clover there are four different pictures of young people doing activities related to the one of the four words in each of the leaves “head,” “hands,” “heart” and “health”. In the “Head” section, a young woman in a 4-H uniform and cap is peeling an apple. In the “Hands” section two girls in uniform are measuring another girl while a woman stands behind a treadle sewing machine. “Heart” is represented by a young boy standing in a pen with his pigs. His house is in the background. Finally, the “Health” section shows a boy in a pasture holding the rope on his steer.
