John Lawson’s drawings of animals native to the Carolinas, originally included in his 1709 book A New Voyage to Carolina; Containing the Exact Description and Natural History of That Country: Together with the Present State Thereof. And A Journal of a Thousand Miles, Travel’d Thro’ Several Nations of Indians. Giving a Particular Account of Their Customs, Manners, &c. The page numbers in the image refer to Lawson’s descriptions of the animals in the original edition of the book. Animals depicted include a buffalo, several snakes, a tortoise, a possum, some species of wild cat attacking a deer, a bear catching a fish, and a raccoon using its tail to catch crabs.
