a woman uses a hand-operated washing machine

Size: 768×602

In this black and white photograph, Mrs. Apple uses an old-fashioned hand-operated device to wash linens. She is pulling a towel from a coated metal tub through a roller. Two aluminum tubs wait on the other side. While both of these tubs appear to have washed items in them, the one furthest from Mrs. Apple is fuller.

Mrs. Apple’s hair is neatly styled and wears thin glasses. Her dress or coat is vividly patterned.

From the window and the door views, it seems her basement is at ground level. It has brick walls and hard floor. Towels hang from a line strung across the ceiling. A hose is attached to the wall and a white pail sits upon a stool.
