The Ganges River, boats, and buildings in Varanasi, India

Size: 661×1024

This is a view of the Ganges River in Varanasi, India. In the foreground, several boats are reflected in the wavering surface of the river. In the background, a bevy of buildings flank the water. One is circular; another is white with arched windows and a porch-like projection; others are covered in stucco or painted dark earth colors. Further down the shore, a set of steps called a ghat leads up to more buildings. A bit of vegetation grows right at the water’s edge, but otherwise, the shore is barren and treeless.
