Ethnographic map of North America - detail
Detail of Henry Lange’s 1854 map, Ethnographisches Karte von Nord Amerika. The map is shaded to show the locations of Indian groups in North America. A note in the upper right corner of the complete map explains: “This map shows the sites of the Indian Tribes of North America when first known to the Europeans about 1600 A.D. along the Atlantic and about 1800 A.D. on the Pacific Ocean.”
This detail shows the area south of the Great Lakes to the northern Gulf of Mexico and from the east coast to what is now Texas.
