Photograph of a pocosin wetland, showing low shrub vegetation.

Sizes available: 1024×684 | 300×200

Pocosin is a type of wetland with evergreen trees and low shrub vegetation growing in peat or sandy soils. Sometimes called shrub bogs, pocosins are typically found in the Atlantic coastal plain in poorly drained uplands between streams and floodplains. Pocosin soils are typically saturated with groundwater except during times of drought. The word pocosin is derived from an Algonquin Indian word that means “swamp on a hill.” This photograph shows a low tree pocosin in the Alligator National Wildlife Refuge, North Carolina.
