The American Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) is a coastal bird whose habitat ranges from the state of Washington to northern Chile on the Pacific coast, and from Virginia to the mouth of the Amazon river on the Atlantic coast. Brown pelicans are known for their habit of diving to the water to catch fish, as opposed to group fishing from the shore like most other pelican species.
