Oysters are mollusks that are usually found in salty or brackish water (water that consists of a mixture of salty and fresh waters). They eat by drawing water over their gills, where food particles become trapped by mucus. These particles are then moved to the mouth and eaten. By such filter-feeding, oysters are credited with filtering both excess nutrients and pollutants from aquatic ecosystems.
