black and white photo of a child leaning against a snow gauge

Sizes available: 823×1024 | 181×225

In this black and white photograph, a child wearing a black winter coat and stocking cap leans against a shielded snow gauge. This image was one of 72 pictures published in 1917 in a book called The Boy With the U.S. Weather Men. The accompanying caption in the book reads, “Measuring the Blizzard’s Rage.” A sophisticated version of this device — the Nipher Shielded Snow Gauge — is still in use by the United States Weather Service today.
