  • Farmville's choice: In this lesson, students will learn about rural life in North Carolina at the turn of the century. Home demonstration and 4H clubs implemented many programs to help people learn better farming techniques, ways of preserving food, and taking care of the home. Several North Carolina leaders went to great lengths to ensure the success of these programs. In part of this activity, students help the town of Farmville dedicate a monument to one of those people. Lera Harrill sitting at a desk

Sizes available: 1536×1070 | 400×279

In this black and white photograph, Lera Harrill is sitting at a desk. Among other things, there are flags, a minature cow, and a picture of his children on his desk. On one wall is a 4-H pledge. On the wall behind him is an animal hide with the following prayer.

If it takes your hide
BE A MAN

God make me a man—
Give me strength to stand for right
When other folks have left the fight.
Give me the courage of the man
Who knows that if he wills he can.
Teach me to see in every face
The good, the kind, and not the base.
Make me sincere in word and deed,
Blot out from all sham and greed.
Help me to guard my troubled soul
By constant active self-control.
Clean up my thoughts, my speech, my play
And keep me brave from day to day.
O, make of me a man!
