Stone carvings in Mahabalipuram, India
These are stone carvings in Mahabalipuram, India. The one furthest to the left is a woman dressed in a clingy dress. She is holding a pot in her left arm and is holding a pitcher loosely in her right hand with the mouth of it turned down. Her expression is serene. Her arms are large and exaggerated, somewhat ungainly with the rest of the figure, perhaps to symbolize her strength. The figure in the middle is a squatting man with a fish in his hands. He has long hair and wears nothing but a decorated loincloth. He grips the fish with both hands and eyes it with a look of reverence and concentration. The statue on the right is a totem, with an elephant on the bottom, a squat lion in the middle, and another animal which is just out of view. The sculptures are made from white and gray stone with a matte finish. In the background, there is a shelter with a thatched roof, under which a man stands next to what appears to be an unfinished sculpture. There is more rock in the background, as well as a shoddy-looking wooden structure.
