The Jaswant Thada Memorial in Jodhpur, India

Size: 1024×660

This is the the Jaswant Thada Memorial in Jodhpur, India. The building has a porch, four domed turrets, and a large, square tower set in the middle of its roof. It is made from polished sheets of white marble which glow in the sunlight. A set of stairs and a T-shaped walkway covered in a checkerboard pattern lead up to the memorial.

Built in 1899, the building was constructed in honor of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, a former ruler of Marwar. Buildings like this one are known as chhatris in India, and are also referred to as cenotaphs. They are dedicated to a person whose remains lie elsewhere. They can also function as an initial burial tomb for someone whose remains are later interred.
