Photograph of a cougar, taken at the North Carolina zoo. Cougars, also called mountain lions, pumas, and panthers, were once common all through the Western Hemisphere, from Canada to South America. However, due to excessive hunting and habitat destruction, their numbers have dramatically decreased.
