Photograph of a demonstration of a colonial-era fire, with a kettle hanging over the fire and a chicken hanging nearby from a string.

Size: 1024×683

This photograph shows how a typical cooking fire might have looked in the colonial era. A kettle hangs over the fire, and a chicken hangs nearby from a string, cooking slowly. The string allowed the chicken to spin, causing it to cook evenly without having to be carefully tended.
