Photograph from the top of a ridge in the Black Mountains, taken at Mount Mitchell State Park. The Black Mountains — the highest mountains east of the Mississippi River — are part of the Blue Ridge mountain chain, and are a subrange of the Appalachians. The hazy blue color that gives the Blue Ridge Mountains their name and distinctive appearance is a result of high humidity.
