In this photograph taken at Mount Mitchell State Park, N.C., the summit of Mount Mitchell appears in the background behind a stand of Fraser firs. At the time this photo was taken, the observation tower at the top of Mount Mitchell was under construction. At 6,684 feet, Mount Mitchell is the highest point east of the Mississippi River.
