Photo of a mountain ridge in Mount Mitchell State Park.

Size: 1024×683

This photograph, taken at Mount Mitchell State Park, N.C., shows the peaks in the Black Mountain range north of Mount Mitchell. The Black Mountains are the highest range east of the Mississippi River, with Mount Mitchell claiming the title of the highest peak in the range. The photo was taken from the summit of Mount Craig, the peak just north of Mount Mitchell and the second-highest summit in the eastern United States. Looking north from Mount Craig, the photo shows Big Tom — the next peak on the ridge, followed by Balsam Cone, and then Cattail Peak.
