Video of students excavating a refuse-filled pit at an archaeological dig at Occaneechi Town, near Hillsborough, North Carolina.

Transcript

Narrator: Archaeological features are carefully dug using trowels. These students are removing the dark fill from a shallow pit. Loose soil from the bottom of the pit is removed with a metal scoop. Later, this dirt will be waterscreened to recover small artifacts.

Student 1: Yeah, it might be a pipe-stem, huh?

Student 2: A pipe-stem of something? Found a turtle shell earlier.

Narrator: Larger artifacts from the pit are removed and saved for study back in the lab.
