Conestoga wagon, rear view
An original 18th-century Conestoga wagon, as seen from the rear. This wagon was brought from Pennsylvania to Fort Dobbs, North Carolina, for a demonstration of life during the French and Indian War. Conestoga wagons were drawn by horses and used to move freight in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. To protect against the weather, they were typically covered with white canvas. During the French and Indian War, Conestoga wagons were used to carry military supplies.
The wagon in this photo is being loaded with barrels by means of a wooden ramp.
