Rock formations near Lower Calf Creek Falls in Escalante, Utah

Size: 1024×682

These are rock formations near Lower Calf Creek Falls in Escalante, Utah. They are made of Navajo sandstone and range from a deep rusty pink close to the valley to light gray at the top of the formations. The rocks near the valley have weathered and eroded in flakes, leaving a jagged series of escarpments and jutting platforms. The rocks at the top have weathered more smoothly, leaving three prominent round knobs dotted with the occasional shrub. The valley is filled with scrubby trees and vegetation. Lower Calf Creek is part of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument.
