This is the Blowing Rock in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. It is named after a Native American story in which two lovers from opposing tribes, the Catawba and the Cherokee, are walking near the rock. When a red sky signals that the brave must return to duty, he is so torn between love and duty that he jumps from the rock and plummets towards the rocky valley below. The maiden asks that the Great Spirit return her lover to her, and sure enough, the winds from the John’s River Gorge blow him back into her arms.
Blowing Rock, North Carolina, became a tourist attraction in the mid- to late 1800s. It grew in the 1900s with the advent of better roads and highways. Today, the town is a popular attraction for tourists in the mountains of North Carolina. It is known for its spectacular views, charming boutiques, shopping outlets, and fine dining restaurants.
