Stone Mountain, North Carolina

Size: 1280×960

This is a man sitting on a bench on a trail near Stone Mountain, North Carolina. Stone Mountain is just that: a towering dome of pale granite. Its bald top is visible for miles before reaching Stone Mountain State Park. The park is a popular spot for rock-climbing; more often than not, you’ll find climbers anchored to the mountain by no more that a spindly tree sprouting from the rock’s craggy face. It is also a popular spot for fly-fishing. The park has more than 16 miles of hiking trails. There is a trail that goes up the mountain itself that offers splendid views, but the climb is long and rather strenuous, as the hiker must clamber up very steep expanses of exposed rock.
