This is Max Patch in Madison County, North Carolina. It is a popular stop along the Appalachian Trail, a hiking trail that runs from Maine to Georgia. It is a mountain bald, a mountaintop area naturally devoid of trees. A road, probably the Blue Ridge Parkway, cuts through the middle of the photo. Clouds cast shadows on the spine of the mountains as well as the more distant ridges. In the middle of the photo, a man flies a kite.
