Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest

Size: 1024×768

These are trees in Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest in Graham County, North Carolina. The forest is a 3,800 acre tract that was set aside in 1900s by the government as a natural area. It was dedicated to the poet Joyce Kilmer, known for his simple but eloquent poem “Trees.” Kilmer died during World War I. The area has been fairly isolated and has remained untouched. Enormous poplars, up to 20 feet in circumference, grow over 125 feet tall. There are also red oaks, hemlocks, and a variety of others.
