Hiwassee Lake in Cherokee County, NC

Sizes available: 300×225 | 1024×768

This is Lake Hiwassee in Cherokee County, NC. The lake is surrounding almost completely by the Nantahala National Forest. It and the river that feeds it, the Hiwassee River, are host to a variety of endangered wildlife, including three types of endangered mussels, a rare variety of sucker fish, and the bog turtle. One species of mussel, the knotty elimia, is endemic to the river basin, which means that it is found nowhere else in the world.
