Whiteside Mountain in Jackson County, North Carolina

Size: 768×1024

This is Whiteside Mountain in Jackson County, North Carolina. Whiteside Mountain is home to several rare species of plants and animals, including the Northern Saw-Whet Owl, the Peregrine Falcon, rock gnome lichen, Highlands moss, and divided-leaf ragwort. The rock face of the mountain is composed primarily of feldspar, quartz, and mica. It is particularly visible on the south side of the mountain, where wind, the sun, and weather have left little vegetation.
