A historical building at the Cradle of Forestry

Size: 1024×768

This is a historical building at the Cradle of Forestry in Translyvania County, North Carolina. The Cradle of Forestry is the site of the first forestry school in America. When George Vanderbilt’s head groundskeeper informed him that it would be wise to have a “Forest Manager,” Vanderbilt hired a man named Gifford Pinchot to take the post. Later, Pinchot’s responsibilities passed on to Dr. Carl A. Schenck, who shaped the woods into what we now know as Pisgah National Forest. The Cradle of Forestry informs visitors of these men and commemorates the beginning of forest conservation with hands-on exhibits, hikes, and preserved, historic buildings.
