Lilypads in an estuary at the North Carolina Estuarium

Size: 400×650

Lilypads cover the water under a boardwalk at the North Carolina Estuarium in Washington, North Carolina. This is an active estuary, and the Estuarium works to preserve it and the flora and fauna present.

An estuary is formed where fresh water and salt water mix together, creating a dynamic and vital ecosystem. The Estuarium is an aquarium with unique exhibits about the Pamlico-Tar River System. It has over 200 exhibits and special programs available for groups. Program topics include Environmental Education, Black Bears, Birds, Blue Crabs, Reptiles and Amphibians, and Wetlands.
