Mayapple flowers at the Moses Cone Manor

Size: 851×1024

These are mayapple flowers at the Moses Cone Manor in Watauga County, North Carolina. Mayapples cover many of the wooded thickets throughout the county. They have a low, shiny, umbrella-shaped spread of leaves and grow in lush carpets. Their flowers are located on the underside of the leaf, which makes them generally invisible to the casual passerby or hiker.
