Raleigh was born in the 1550s. In his early years he showed much of the character he would display as an intercontinental adventurer in his adulthood. He fought for England in France and Ireland, and even went to college for a time at Oxford. While he was adept at managing battlefields and classrooms, his real skill lay in managing courtly life. He returned to England from fighting abroad in 1581 and quickly became a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I. He was knighted for his heroism and was granted several large estates for his personal use in Ireland.
