  • NC Folk Artists It is important to recognize and preserve the art forms of North Carolina. On this site the artists explain their art through audio, video, images, and text.
  • Archaeology and the Ancient History of North Carolina Uses images of artifacts, maps, and artwork to accompany brief overviews of the movements of American Indians as they made their way to North Carolina.
  • Quilts and Quiltmaking in America Interviews with quilters highlight quilting within the context of daily life. The online collection shows both highly traditional and innovative quilts, and demonstrates the artisans' excellent design and technical skill.
  • Lesson plan: Pottery traditions Students will learn how Indian people of North Carolina made and used coiled pottery, summarize why archaeologists study pottery, and make and decorate a replica of a North Carolina coiled pot.
  • Lesson plan: Artifact classification Students will use pictures of artifacts or objects from a teaching kit to classify artifacts and answer questions about the lifeways of a group of historic Native Americans.
  • Lesson plan: History in quilts Students will recognize how people from different cultures and time periods have passed down the tradition of quiltmaking.

The Appalachian Cultural Museum, part of Appalachian State University, was created to foster an understanding of the people of the Appalachian Mountains and to serve as a laboratory for new museum ideas. Through exhibits, publications, and special events, the Museum presents the rich traditions of the region. The Museum gives new meaning to life in western North Carolina in a manner that is authentic and non-stereotypical.
