Rowan County Nature and Learning Center
Birds of prey, mammals, and reptiles can be seen at the Nature Center Complex. For younger children there is a petting zoo.

- North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission - Wildlife Species and Habitat Information A North Carolina Wildlife Resources site with detailed information about wildlife resources and management in the state. Information about animals such as the wood duck, white-tailed deer, beaver, wild turkey, quail, sea turtles, and predators such as various owls, osprey, black bear, wild boar and the gray fox is found here.
- Carolina Raptor Center Find answers to their raptor questions, in-depth information about and photos of over twenty raptor species (the species includes owl, eagles, vultures, and more!), and a huge variety of raptor activities and games such as crossword puzzles, quizzes, and coloring pages. There is also information on visiting the Center.
- Lesson plan: Animal slide shows! This project is a culmination of a science unit on animals which integrates computer skills, language arts and art. After a study of animals which includes classification, basic needs of animals, animal adaptations, and animal behaviors, the students will use the computer to complete a slide show of one animal they have studied at length.
- Lesson plan: Animals movin' on up Children will explore animal body parts in animal pictures using the inquiry method. They will discuss their functions in movement and eating. They will also discuss the idea that classifications of animals have similar body parts.
- Lesson plan: Seasons change This lesson introduces students to the characteristics of the changing seasons and allows students to see how plants, animals, and people adapt to the changes.

- Western North Carolina Nature Center: Like a field trip into the western North Carolina outdoors, this site will introduce you to the plants, animals and environs of the Southern Appalachians. There is a featured news article about a wildlife dilemma, species, or situation. An academic guide for teachers who want to plan a visit to the center is available through the site, as well. A web tour of the wildlife areas of the living museum which exhibits plants and animals native to the Southern Appalachians are also available through the site. The areas on the tour include a petting area, predator habitat, otter habitat, nocturnal hall, nature trail, educational farm, and the main exhibit area of the Western North Carolina Nature Center.
