The main gallery of this museum features the long-term exhibit - "THE WATER AND THE WOOD: The History of Onslow County." The exhibit documents the history of the county from its geologic foundations beginning 65 million to the present. Areas of particular note include the county’s first inhabitants - the Native Americans of the area beginning approximately twelve thousand years ago, including an 800 year old - 38 foot dug-out canoe found in the Half Moon Branch of the New River. Museum visitors can travel through time to learn more about the area’s rich and diverse natural and cultural heritage including Colonial settlement, early trades and industries, the impact of the Civil War, agricultural traditions, the dynamic changes brought about by World War II and the establishment of Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base, and the emergence of modern Onslow.
