Museum of the Albemarle
Students can explore the lives of inhabitants, the development of industries, and the Albemarle area's social and cultural background at this museum.
One of the six regional museums of the North Carolina Museum of History, the Museum of the Albemarle serves thirteen counties in northeastern North Carolina. Sometimes "considered the birthplace of English America", visitors can explore the history of the oldest section of North Carolina.
The museum offers a variety of tours and programs, both at the museum or in the classroom. All of these are aligned with the North Carolina social studies curriculum. If you can’t visit the museum, traveling trunks are available to be used in the classroom. Each trunk contains “background materials, reproduction artifacts, lessons, and activities that tie North Carolina history with language arts, science, math, and visual art. Kits are available for loan up to three weeks at no charge.” The museum is located at 501 S. Water Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. More information regarding tours can be found on the museum website. Call Charlotte Patterson, Education Coordinator, at(252) 335-1453 to arrange a visit. For renting classroom space, contact Lisa Doepker at (252) 331-4047
