Three historic houses furnished with the “plain” pine furniture of the early Sandhills are part of the Historic Shaw Properties. The Shaw House, circa 1820, is the oldest house in Southern Pines on its original foundation and is typical of the ante-bellum homes in the Sandhills. It "displays the charm of sturdy simplicity highlighted by fine detail on two wooden fireplace mantels of unusual beauty." The Sanders cabin is over 200 years old and has been cited as an excellent example of a one room cabin of an early settler. The Garner House is the finest example of the rural homes of early Moore County.

The Historic Shaw Properties Site is open Wednesday through Sunday from 1-4 PM. Group tours can be arranged. Admission is by suggested donation of $2.00; children are always admitted free. For more information contact Janet Cunningham at (910) 692-7811 or the Shaw House at (910) 692-2051 during regular hours.
