This museum is well known for its dioramas depicting coastal creatures and their habitats. The Reef Room, a walk-through exhibit complete with turtles and sharks, represents the ocean miles off the shore. The museum also boasts a Native American collection with pottery, projectile points, two dugout canoes, and reproductions of ancient tools. It houses one of the most extensive displays of native shells found anywhere in the Carolinas. Located just one short block from the barrier island beach, the area features a tidal wetland and remnant maritime forest. The website explains how to prepare for a visit with a group, including pre-teaching ideas, activities, and grade-level assessments of the galleries. Please see photographs of the Museum from NC ECHO

Located 4 miles away form the museum is the Ingram Planetarium. It offers planetary and astronomy programs and hands-on exhibits for all ages.
