- Lesson plan: “Picturing” America at the turn of the twentieth century Students link together the literature and the history of the United States at the turn of the twentieth century. Questions guide students as they study visual documents. Students also read the teacher's choice of two widely anthologized short stories and an excerpt from a best-selling novel of the period. Two exercises will raise student awareness of the impact that visual images have on their lives: one that is based on internet advertising and a second that results in a student-produced scrapbook.

No house in America brings the glorious Gilded Age more vividly to life than Biltmore House, in Asheville, North Carolina. More than 90 rooms, faithfully preserved and filled with thousands of original furnishings, suggest that the Vanderbilts are still at home. From the opulent living quarters enjoyed by family and friends to the downstairs domain of the domestic staff, the House presents a detailed portrait of the great 19th-century country estate.
The Biltmore website contains many photographs of the house and grounds. To find the more informational sections (rather than commercial), navigate to the Explore heading. Here you will find the virtual tours of some of the rooms and portions of the gardens, fun facts, and an activities page for kids.
The Biltmore Estate offers several programs from which to choose for school groups. All programs are linked to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
