• EEK! Environmental Education for Kids An electronic magazine for kids in grades 4-8 and their teachers too that features constantly changing information, games, and activities about nature and the environment.
• North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission - Wildlife Species and Habitat Information A North Carolina Wildlife Resources site with detailed information about wildlife resources and management in the state. Information about animals such as the wood duck, white-tailed deer, beaver, wild turkey, quail, sea turtles, and predators such as various owls, osprey, black bear, wild boar and the gray fox is found here.
• Lesson plan: People and endangered species Students examine some endangered species and the ways that human activities contribute to species endangerment. Students are asked to devise their own species protection plans.
• Lesson plan: Haiku and Photography: a Natural Connection This lesson will allow students to combine photographing nature with creating a Haiku poem to express what they see in the photograph.
• Lesson plan: Preserving biodiversity Students examine maps and then create a map that shows where some endangered species live around the world.

Legal

The Rudolph Howell and Son Environmental Learning Center consists of over 2,800 acres containing nine natural communities and a diverse flora and fauna. Rudolph Howell donated the land to Johnston Community College and wanted it to be used as an outdoor classroom. The Learning Center brought Mr. Howell’s wish to reality. The property is actively managed for the benefit of wildlife, educational opportunities, and low impact outdoor recreation by the staff of Johnston County Community College. Howell Woods offers a variety of educational and entertaining programs and activities for all ages.
