  • Lesson plan: Learn about your county This activity will allow fourth grade students in North Carolina to learn more about the counties that surround their home county. Using online images, students will create a multimedia presentation to share with others.
  • Lesson plan: Why is the past important? As an introduction to the study of North Carolina's archaeological heritage, students will use personally owned object to share the importance of their past and connect this importance with reasons why the human past is important.

Located in the heart of downtown Smithfield, the Heritage Center is in the renovated former home office of First Citizens Bank. It was created in 1997 to preserves the history and material culture of Johnston County. It has interpretive exhibits, programs, and publications.

The Heritage Roadshow will come to schools to share to share items of historical interest, including old photographs, letters, diaries, journals, school yearbooks, and other primary source materials.

To visit the center, call (919) 934-2836 or send email to heritagecenter@johnstonnc.com. The center is open 9:00-5:00 Monday-Saturday and requires no admission fees. To schedule a Heritage Roadshow, contact Wingate Lassiter at wingate.lassiter@johnstonnc.com or telephone 938-4708.
