• Documenting the American South Ten thematic collections of books, diaries, posters, artifacts, letters, oral history interviews, and songs for the study of Southern history, literature, and culture.
• Lesson plan: Interpreting Diaries of the American South Students will read diaries of individuals who lived in the American South from 1865-1917. After reading these diaries the students will use a visual means of displaying their interpretation. Visual presentations will be one of the following: shadow box, poster, PowerPoint using drawings done by the student, brochure, or presenting an item that would have been used during the time that their diary was written.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Johnson Farm was a late 19th century tobacco farm that became a popular summer tourist retreat in the early 20th century. Today, the farm is owned by the Henderson County Public Schools and operated as a heritage education center and farm museum. The farm features an 1870’s brick house, a 1920’s boarding house, a barn-loft museum, 10 historic buildings, two nature trails, and 15 acres of fields, forests, and streams.

Tours of the farm house, the boarding house and the barn loft museum are given by docents year round Tuesday through Saturday. The time of an average tour is approximately three hours. Hours of Operation: May - October Tuesday-Saturday, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm Sunday, 1:00-4:00 pm November - April Wednesday-Saturday, 10:00 am-2:00 pm Admission: Adults - $3.00 Students - $2.00 Group rates are available upon request. By prior arrangement, extra docents can be scheduled for groups. No concessions are available; however, picnicking is permitted on the grounds.
