Mendenhall Plantation
A visit to the Mendenhall Plantation shows students that there were dissenters to slavery in antebellum North Carolina. Buildings on the property include the main house, an old school house, the Madison Lindsay House and Medical School, a spring house, and a barn. There is also a restored wagon that may have been used to help runaway slaves.
Built around 1811, the Mendenhall Plantation consists of a large main building and several out buildings. The owners of the home were Quakers and dissenters during the Civil War. Visitors will learn about the “The Other South” of anti-slavery and pacifism.
The plantation is located at 603 West Main Street in Jamestown and is open Tuesday through Friday: 11-3; Saturday: 1-4; and Sunday: 2-4. It is closed on Mondays. Tours may be arranged by appointment. Call 454-3819. Admission: $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for seniors, students, and children.
