The nature programs offered by the Schoolhouse of Wonder can be held at the Nature Center or in your classroom. With hands-on experience, students learn the importance of taking care of the Earth.

  • Lesson plan: Nature journaling: A new way to enjoy nature Nature jounaling is a way to record and re-create an image experienced in nature. By combining drawing and writing, the student uses their senses to record what they feel, see, hear and touch at a particular point in time.
  • Lesson plan: Animals undercover Students will learn about the different animal coverings using the inquiry method. They will learn about how the covering is used for protection and to control body temperatures.
  • Educational in Nature A series of environmental education curriculum supplements designed to foster understanding and environmental awareness in the classroom. These activities, games, lesson plans, and information cover such topics as forests, animals, recycling, and energy.
  • Lesson plan: Rivers: Lifelines of the land This Xpeditions lesson introduces students to river ecology and addresses the societal and environmental impacts associated with dams and their construction.

Located in the West Point on the Eno, the Schoolhouse of Wonder Nature School Program provides a day long field trip experience for elementary age children. "The Eno River, forest, meadows, and historic buildings provide a lush setting for learning. The restored West Point Mill, is used to teach students about local history, agriculture, and trade, while the organic garden has many plants with historical and cultural significance." Schoolhouse of Wonder Nature School programs operate Monday-Friday during the spring and fall semesters. Call (919) 477-2116 for more information
