This museum is a public, non-profit, educational institution dedicated to the preservation, advancement and presentation of the maritime history and shipwrecks of the North Carolina Outer Banks from the earliest periods of exploration and colonization to the present day with particular emphasis n the periods from 1524 to 1945. There are 1000 known shipwrecks in the area where the Labrador Current meets the Gulf Stream. They included German U-boats, passenger ships, and cargo vessels.
