The Walter B. Jones Sr. Center for The Sounds and the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge
Students can take a walk on the Scuppernong River Interpretive Boardwalk and participate in an environmental education program at the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.
This wildlife refuge covers three counties: Hyde, Tyrrell, and Washington, but the headquarters is located in Columbia in Tyrell County. The refuge provides protection and habitat to migratory waterfowl and other birds. Bears and red wolves can also be found here.
The Walter B. Jones Sr. Center for The Sounds at the headquarters has an interpretive boardwalk along the Scuppernong River. Opportunities for environmental education / outreach and refuge tours are available to groups upon request. Call 252-796-3004 for more information.
