Considered on of the most influential individuals in American Government, Jesse Helms served in the United States Senate for 30 years. He was a leader in the rise of the modern conservative movement. Today, the Jesse Helms Center "exists to promote the principles of free enterprise, representative democracy, traditional American values, and a strong national defense upon which former U.S. Senator Jesse Helms built his life and career."
The Center provides a lecture series for both teachers and students. These lectures help them gain an understanding and appreciation of the world. Past speakers include Dr. Condoleezza Rice, General Henry Hugh Shelton, Reverend Franklin Graham, Dr. Henry Kissinger, Lady Margaret Thatcher, and Dr. Madeleine Albright.
Each summer the Center has a "Free Enterprise Leadership Conference." It helps promote students’ understanding of business, personal responsibility, and the opportunities available to them in the free enterprise system. During the week, students interact with prominent community and business leaders who share success stories and answer students’ questions about their careers.
The Center promotes a "Laws of Life Essay Contest" for middle and high school students. Through this contest, young people reflect upon and write about their personal beliefs and values. Contest awards are made up of cash and/or savings bonds for participants at all levels.
Middle and high school groups are invited to visit the Jesse Helms Center. Tours include the Charles A. Cannon Free Enterprise Hall of Fame, UN Exhibit, and the exhibit featuring recent United States Presidents. For groups of 10 or more, please call ahead to make arrangements. To schedule a tour, contact Mrs. Ladonna Snodgrass at 704-233-1776.
