In 1988, the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad began offering scenic excursions through tunnels and across river gorges. Throughout the year, many different excursions are available. Younger students will enjoy the "The Little Engine That Could™ I think I Can RAIL TOUR" and "A Day Out With Thomas™" trips. Older students would enjoy the Nantahala Gorge or Tuckasegee River trips. In the fall there are special trips scheduled and in November and December, there is a "Polar Express" excursion to the "North Pole". In addition, students can visit the Great Smoky Mountain Model Train Museum in Bryson City.

Advance reservations are recommended. For groups of 20 or more, please call the Reservation Center at 1-800-872-4681 and ask to talk with a group reservationist for information and pricing.
