- Lesson plan: Economic Resources Using Thinking Maps This lesson uses several literature selections in order to identify and classify natural, human, and capital resources. Students will work together in small groups to gather information and individually complete a Thinking Map. The assessment includes completing a Tree Map individually and sharing group information with the rest of the class. This lesson will take two days.
- Lesson plan: Food choice in our everyday lives Focuses on everyday foods and how these foods relate to the food pyramid. Students will recognize food vocabulary in the target language (Spanish) and will make healthy food choices by creating thinking maps, a school menu in the target language, and exploring food choices from around the world.
- Lesson plan: Healthy foods = super kids This lesson focuses on how the foods we eat affect our bodies in both beneficial and harmful ways. Students will learn that grains provide energy; vegetables are needed for healthy skin, hair and eyes; fruits help the body heal, milk builds strong bones and teeth; meat builds muscle and gives strength; and sweets, fats, and oils are high in calories and give few vitamins and minerals and do little to help our bodies grow.
- Nutrition.gov A government gateway to reliable information on nutrition, healthy eating, physical activity, and food safety. Includes a calorie and nutrient calculator and a MyPyramid Plan to help you choose food and amounts that just right for you.
- How Stuff Works Gives explanations of how everything around us actually works. Find information on credit, computers, cell phones, and more.
- Nutrition Cafe As a food sleuth, you will discover what nutrients your victims are missing. You can also play an answer and question game about food basics, fast food, bone building, weight control, and more! Other tasty games are accompanied by an interactive food guide pyramid, a nutrition glossary, and dietary guidelines.

The Ashe County Cheese factory is open for school groups to visit to see how cheese is made. Their viewing room is open year-round from 8:30am - 5:00pm from Monday through Saturday at no charge. Cheese is made 4 - 5 days a week and almost always on Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday. Call ahead to schedule a visit at 336-246-2501 or 1-800-445-1378.
