• Lesson plan: Atomic spectra and the Bohr model Students view continuous spectra from incandescent and fluorescent lights and line spectra of selected elements. Students relate energy to frequency of light seen in the spectra. The presence of only certain lines in atomic spectra is related to Bohr's model of the atom. In a second experiment, students determine electron energies in the hydrogen atom.
• Greatest Engineering Achievements of the 20th Century Explores 20 of the 20th Century's engineering achievements and discusses how engineering shapes the world we live in. Some of the engineering achievements on this site include agricultural mechanization, household appliances, highways, automobiles, and electrification.
• Lesson plan: Splitting the atom The purpose of this lesson is to use the internet to research the history of the splitting of the atom and to use that research to make a presentation on an aspect of that topic.

Legal

The Nuclear Engineering Department at NC State University invites high school science classes and science clubs to visit the department for a one-and-a-half hour program which highlights the field of nuclear engineering and industrial applications. The visit includes “an overview presentation and tours of our PULSTAR research reactor, our neutron activation lab and/or our plasma lab.”

The Department will also send experts in the field of nuclear engineering to high school science classes to discuss nuclear science and its applications. They will also talk about career opportunities in the field. Science Days at middle and elementary schools are scheduled once time is permitted.
