Located in the old Granville County jail, this renovated museum’s mission is to preserve the rich heritage of the county which includes the early Native American Tuscarora tribe, the colonial and revolutionary war period, its influential citizens, the Civil War, and the tobacco industry.

Visitors to the museum will begin their tour viewing a history of Granville County in the museum’s new theater which has seats which were salvaged from Oxford’s Orpheum Theater. The tour includes both audio and video displays of Granville County residents relating their life experiences to visitors.

The ground floor is devoted to Native Americans as well as the importance of agriculture in the county. Upstairs visitors will see memorabilia collected from Oxford College and Horner Military Academy. Military uniforms of residents who fought in the Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, the Korean conflict, the Vietnam War, and Iraq War are also on display. There is even a section of the museum devoted to moonshining which was prevalent in the area a long time ago.

The museum is located in downtown Oxford and is open Wednesday through Friday 10AM - 4PM and Saturday 11AM - 3PM. Admission is free. For more information, please call (919) 693-9706 or send email to gcmuseum@earthlink.net.
