The National institute of Environmental Health is a United States Government research facility which works toward “using environmental sciences to help people live longer and healthier lives.” The facility, which is located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, offers educational outreach for K-12 teachers and their students through tours at the facility and NIEHS staff visits to the classroom.

Tours which take place on weekdays during normal business hours last from approximately 1 to 3 hours and deal with a wide range of environmental health topics. Students can also learn about career options in biomedical research. Guided tours also include a video, a hands-on demonstration, a brief overview of a specific research initiative from one of their senior scientists, a 30 minute presentation, and a discussion of their K-12 education program resources and classroom activities.

For classes which cannot come to the facility and are within a 50 mile radius of the Institute, a member of the NIEHS staff will come to the classroom. The program consists of “a general overview that includes a discussion of the Institute’s mission and programs, and a more focused presentation package that covers a specific research agenda.”

If you would like to learn more about these classroom opportunities or simply arrange for a visit, contact Dr. Marian Johnson-Thompson, Office of Education and Biomedical Research Development at (919) 541-4265 or e-mail johnso21@niehs.nih.gov, or call Lou Rozier, NIEHS Office of Communications at (919) 541-1993 or e-mail rozier@niehs.nih.gov.
